Context
One of the most widely spoken languages in the world today and which has gained a lot of support today is English. In a context where you can no longer travel, have access to resources of specialized expertise without clashing with the language of Shakespeare, Youth for Challenge has given itself the challenge of contributing to the continuous learning of this language at through the creation of an English club in Lokossa on October 13, 2018.
the project's objectives
• Develop a strong community of English language enthusiasts;
• Contribute to the continuous learning of English for all.
Project implementation
Called Djimon Hounsou English Club, our English corner comes alive every Saturday from 4 p.m. in the CAEB / Lokossa enclosure and has the participation of teachers, pupils, students, American volunteers and many enthusiasts of this language. Since its creation, this club has continued to see its membership increase. The debates revolve around the different themes concerning national and international news, culture, sport, education, etc.
We can cite: Freedom of expression in Benin - Principles of Democratic and Republican parties in USA - Immigration: challenge and opportunities - Traditional family versus modern family - Educational standards in Benin, UK and USA - Agricultural challenge in Benin - and so on.
Funding and partner
Continuous activity, the various members generally contribute to the occasional out-of-pocket expenses relating to the preparation of teaching materials which are around 35,000 CFA francs. We did not have specific partners on this project. In terms of perspectives, we hope to enlarge the circle of the community and forge partnerships in order to acquire the necessary material for a better linguistic animation.
Results obtained and quantified impact
• More than fifty pupils, students and other enthusiasts acquired new knowledge and improved their listening, speaking, reading and writing levels.
Difficulties encountered and solution approaches
Our main difficulty was the lack of technological equipment that could allow the club to learn better and quickly. We would therefore need to acquire the necessary materials in order to improve our activities.
